Picket in Brussels: Europe called to stop backing of Lukashenka’s dictatorship

16.11.2009

Activists of the Belarusian European Association held a picket on the Solidarity Day near the building where the EU Council has a session.

As Radio Svaboda reminds, the 27 EU foreign ministers are to discuss a question of sanctions on the Belarusian leadership among other issues.

As head of the BEA Zmitser Pimenau said, it was an “information picket, where the statement of the Conservative Christian Party BPF was handed out. The statement says European politicians should consider an issue on the fact that the Belarusians do not have an opportunity to file complaints to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. This is one of our demands.”

Zmitser Pimenau believes that the money given to the Belarusian authorities by the EU and IMF are directed against Europe.

“We turn attention to the fact that the money the European Union gives Belarus are spent on rearmament of the anti-European military bloc, in our view,” the BEA head says. “We do not see the IMF money is spent on people and for the benefit of Belarus. Unfortunately, the money is spent on new missiles, tanks and air defence systems that will be aimed at towns in Poland and the Baltic states. We handed out over 600 leaflets. It was very pleasant to see politicians who came up and expressed their interest. Representatives of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia expressed their solidarity with us.”
