On August the 30th the whole world celebrates the International Day of the Disappeared. On this day We Remember organized an action dedicated to the involuntary disappeared persons in Belarus.

The action took place in Amsterdam, Netherlands, at one of the central squares, Leidseplein, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. local time. Participants of the action were holding portraits of disappeared Yuri Zakharenko, Viktor Gonchar, Anatoly Krasovsky, Dmitry Zavadsky. The action was supported by life performances of resident musicians. Pieceful demonstration attracted attention of the numerous city-dwellers and guests of the capital of the Netherlands. They asked participants questions, expressed their support, solidarity and compassion.

Enforced disappearance is a continuing phenomenon in one hundred countries based on the 2009 report of UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. The practice of enforced disappearances is now prevented by the existence of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The Convention was unanimously adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 20, 2006. To date, 83 states have already signed and 19 States have ratified the Convention — only one more ratification is lacking for the treaty’s entry into force.
