“European Belarus” activists have held a rally of solidarity with Belarusian political prisoners in Warsaw on February 16.
Belarusians living in Warsaw or those who have been forced to leave Belarus because of politically motivated crackdown and a danger of incarceration after the presidential election, gathered together on the Castle Square of Warsaw in order to observe the Day of Solidarity. The rally consisted of several parts. In the first part with the help of a beamer Warsaw dwellers were demonstrated a film about the events of December 19 in Minsk. At the same time Belarusians lined up holding portraits of political prisoners Andrei Sannikov, Iryna Khalip, Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, Zmitser Bandarenka, Alyaksandr Atroshchankau, Anastasiya Palazhanka, Mikalai Statkevich, Anatol Lyabedzka and others, as well as a big banner “STOP TERROR IN BELARUS”. Several persons were handing out leaflets with information about the situation with political prisoners, the press-service of “European Belarus” informs.
In the second part of the rally a special wall was built. It symbolized all Belarusian walls behind which the opponents of the Belarusian regime are staying. Warsaw residents came up to this wall and wrote words of solidarity and support for Belarusian political prisoners. In the end of the rally the symbolic wall was destroyed by the activists.
As a coordinator of “European Belarus” civil campaign Dzmitry Barodka said, “Belarusians should gather for such rallies, in order to remind Europe and the whole world that the Belarusian tyrant still keeps in prisons dozens of people for their political views, for their desire of freedom. The topic of Belarus should not disappear from mass media, especially amid the recent events in Tunisia, Egypt and Iran.”
