Belarusians’ tragedy remembered in Europe
February 18 2011

On February 19 rallies of solidarity with victims of political repressions in Belarus were held in London and The Hague.

Participants demanded unconditional release of all political prisoners, respect for human rights, punishment for those responsible for unleashing terror against their own nation.

In London about 50 persons gathered near the Belarusian Embassy. Among them were representatives of the Amnesty International, Index on Censorship, Article 19, and the British PEN-center. A well-known actor Samuel West emotionally told about the situation in Belarus and read out the letter which demonstrators planned to pass to the Embassy, however no one came out to them. Participants of the rally chanted: “Long live Belarus!”, “Freedom to Sannikov, Nyaklyaeu, Mikhalevich, Radzina, Khalip, Fyaduta!”, “We need free election!”, “Freedom of assembly!”, “Freedom of expression!”

The rally lasted for about an hour. Mr West expressed gratitude to all present and to policemen who were guarding the Embassy, and noted that their behaviour was very civil, unlike the actions of Belarusian policemen on December 19.

In The Hague, in front of the building of the Hague tribunal, Belarusians living in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, urged to take the Belarusian dictator Alyaksandr Lukashenka to the International Criminal Court.
