Mass action “Freedom for Belarus” held in Berlin

18.05.2011

A public action “Freedom for Belarus” in Berlin’s Treptower Park was organized by member of the Youth of the European People’s Party (YEPP).

YEPP’s VIII congress was held in Berlin these days. Thousands of its participants came to the Belarusian Embassy to show their protest against political trials in Belarus in the case of December 19.

According to witnesses, they cannot recall a more mass and big public action devoted to Belarus ever held in Germany.

Philipp Mißfelder, the chairman of YEPP’s German member Junge Union Deutschlands, said: “The Youth of the European People’s Party, who gathered at the embassy with names and portraits of illegally arrested opponents of the Belarusian regime, demands freedom and democracy for Belarus.”

“By this demonstration we remind that we did not forget about people in this country and support the opposition in their struggle for the rule of law and free elections.

YEPP members from 35 European countries established close contacts with the Belarusian opposition long ago. Solidarity with the forces fighting for freedom and democracy in Belarus is needed today more than ever. People need our encouragement and support,” Philipp Mißfelder said.
