The on-going political crackdown in Belarus has intensified Western attention to "Europe's last dictatorship." Since the onset of this repression, the economic and political situation inside the country has deteriorated and Belarus' dictatorial leader Alexander Lukashenko faces his gravest crisis to date. These developments call for robust U.S. and European Union (EU) engagement which should aim to catalyze positive, democratic change and lay the groundwork for a post-Lukashenka Belarus.
The Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and Freedom House released the recent findings and recommendations of the expert Working Group on Belarus, comprised of leading analysts, scholars, and former policymakers. Co-chaired by A. Wess Mitchell (president, CEPA) and David Kramer (president, Freedom House), the Working Group report provides impactful policy strategies for supporting members of the opposition, civil society and journalists and recommendations for catalyzing democratic change and creating the groundwork for a possible transition in Belarus.
